Does anyone have the setup software for the CP650? I'm on 2.3.6.6 and tried registering for their support portal, but got the big middle finger back from them. If anyone has the installer, please PM me.
At my venue, the CP-650 is used for 35mm analog/digital and also for 35/70 magnetic
sound, which we occasionally run. The 70mm DTS also passes through it on its' way
to a Trinnov processor. I haven't bothered with the updates since it's already working
fine with whatever version we've got and I'm a firm believer in the old phrase that "if
it works, don't muck around with it". I have two spare 650's at home, one, if you recall
from an earlier post, is literally being used as a doorstop. I've thought about upgrading
that one,,since if I manage to accidentally "brick it", it won't affect its' current functionality.
Hoping not to necro this thread, but has anyone been able to get the CP650 software working on Windows 7? It runs on mine, but won't connect. It could be the serial adapter, but it's the same that is working under XP. Both 7 and XP are in Virtualbox, btw.
Serial adapter is a Prolific 2303, should I try to get an FDTI-based serial adapter?

Yes, I had lots of trouble with the Prolific adapter that was already in the booth, I picked up an FTDI one and it was easy.
Three issues here. Firstly, the CP650 likes some USB to RS232 adapters, but not others (this is a known good one I carry in my toolkit). Secondly, you need to make sure that the communications settings are correct in the device manager entry for the USB to RS232 adapter (9600 / 8N1). Thirdly, I've now encountered two CP650s in which the RS232 interface just died (I tried both the front and back DB9 jacks, obviously), and no communication with it is possible. There was one in which I was able to connect without any trouble, and then at the next PM call when I wanted to check and adjust the channel gains, the exact same laptop and adapter failed to connect to it. The following day I connected to a CP650 at the shop using the same equipment and without any problems. A Dolby tech at that site for a room tune a few weeks later reported that he couldn't connect to that CP650 either, and that this is an increasingly common failure mode, especially with earlier CP650s. He suspects that the backplanes go bad.

For sure. Another nuance to watch out for, at least with WinDRAS, is that if I recall correctly it can only be configured against COM1-4. If your adapter is creating com ports at higher numbers you have to correct that or sometimes easier just to try another adapter.
In regards to adapters preferable, I have used a lot the Trip Lite USA-19HS, that was suggested in the past with no issues with CP650 or other cinema machinery. It doesn't tend to come up in searches nowadays.
And in reference to Jim's delightful post, it would be great, if he updates the doorstop, to let us know if the new firmware is gentler with the spring mechanisms. I could find nothing on the version release notes...
The Tripp-Lite version works well and even functions when passed through to a Windows VM.
Note that you need a "striaght-through" (pin-to-pin) DB9 cable, not a "null modem" cable (which has tx and rx and some other pins reversed). Also note that you need to be sure that nothing is connected to the rear panel serial port (assuming that you are using the front one for setup). You can only use one of those serial ports at a time.
There is a newer version of the Dolby software that is needed for Win10, but I don't remember if the version number incremented on that one (the one that I am using is version "2.3.1.1").
This is my CP 650, version is 2.3.6.6, works with the standard setup software on my legacy Win 7 laptop - 2.3.1.1 version. The original owner bought this CP 650 in 2013
So I assume EOL now.
