  • USL JSD-80 7.1 operation

I know there have been some discussions about this on this forum already long ago, but it seems the actual 7.1. operation I see from a specific installation is different from what I expect. This device runs latest software and has been configured to 5.1 and 7.1 a few years ago when the screen went digital. I also looked at the available documentation on the legacy USL FTP server. These docs seem to suggest that the JSD-80 can do real 7.1 with split Bsl and Bsr channels (the signal flow diagrams show individual channels and no 'EX-type' summation). Yet it seems that I only get a mono back surround out of this unit. Does someone have detailed knowledge about the actual limitations of 7.1 on a JSD-80? Would the limitation to mono back surround not also mean that the intended '5 screen ' L/Lc/C/Rc/R operation then would also have been 'another' spread mono center around the standard center channel - which would be pretty useless?

The JSD-80 7.1 operation mode manual clearly states

'6. The JSD-80 is ready to provide discrete BackSurround Left and Right output signals.'

The JSD80 can indeed handle real 7.1 as you detailed above. Your JSD80 needs to be on the correct firmware and your software also has to be correct. There is a JSD80 _7_1_Installation_Package.zip file on the FTP that has everything you should need...including some instructions.

I guess I meant this statement by Gordon here: http://www.film-tech.com/cgi-bin/ubb...003703/p1.html

'The DTS XD10P unlike the USL JSD80 doesnt support a mix of 5.1 and 7.1 The USL if configured to 7.1 does a sort of EX for the rear wall'

I remember also hearing from other people that 7.1 on the JSD-80 would be somewhat crippled, but my memory is diffuse...

Try this folder, Carsten. I hope it helps.

        http://ftp.uslinc.com/Products/JSD-80/Software/Firmware

I kind of remember the DTS would support AES out of the box while the USL needed the AES expansion board maybe? Foggy memory too

To ensure proper operation of the JSD-80E system in 7.1 configuration, please verify that the items listed below have been performed or installed.
        1. JSDC-80E control card installed in JSD-80E chassis.
        2. PIC Firmware Version is 101130 .
        3. JSD-80 Laptop Interface Software Version: 2.1.545 Build 545 DR program is used for JSD-80 set-up and configuration.
        4. Followed setup instructions in JSD-80DE Operation in 7.1 mode (below) to prepare for 7.1 operation. Please note the information regarding “Presets”.
        5. Installed AES input channel redirect adapter labeled JSD-80 (7.1) AES INPUT ADAPT on JSD-80DE EXT2 input connector. Required to send server output AES channels 11 and 12 (discrete back surrounds) to JSD-80 AES input channels 7 and 8 (BSL and BSR outputs).
        6. Go to this internet link for information about JSD-80DE missing commands from Doremi servers: http://kb.uslinc.com/browser/browser...-recid=RID_!43
        JSD-80DE Operation in 7.1 mode
        1. Open Interface Software v2.1.545 Build 545 and Connect to JSD-80.
        2. Open Formats page in GUI.
        3. Click on MONO or STEREO or For SR button.
        4. Click on Advanced Options.
        5. In the Input selector box, select AES/EBU, and check the Discrete function which will appear below the Input selector.
        6. The JSD-80 is ready to provide discrete BackSurround Left and Right output signals.
Switching between the normal 5.1 configuration and the new 7.1 configuration is accomplished by automation selection of the appropriate JSD-80 Format (EXT2 for 5.1 or MONO or STEREO/For SR for 7.1) as required by the source material from the server.

I have two installed in 7.1 systems and they sound great.

I seem to recall the DTS version lacked a couple of Dolby related features as DTS didn't wish to pay royalties to Dolby Labs. Perhaps I'm thinking of a different product.

Steve will be along to enlighten us any minute now.

DTS chose not to support the SPIDf input for Aux and Nonsync and as such had no dolby support for the aux input.
The DTS supported L LE C RE R P Q channels not 7.1 rear channels

Did you load the specific 7.1 firmware?

Other than with proper test material, it's pretty hard to hear the difference between 6.1, matrix-decoded 7.1 and discrete 7.1.

Yes, the device has been updated and 7.1 enabled back in 2013. Yet we see, or better, hear, strange issues with the back surrounds.

I have two units that are used for backup when some client's processors dies...... Anyway it works as 7.1 wihout problem. Either there is some mixup in you're or try reload firmware, it could be problem that dsp did not pass ok?

Carsten, it did do with all installation we made. We later upgraded nearly all to 7.1 discrete without issues. It played the Dolby 7.1 channel ID like intended.

What input source do you have selected to playback 7.1 content?
