As an engineer I like the idea of muting the sound when the main soundtrack does not work - I know someone who did something similar for DTS back in the days, to make sure the format actually played ? - but I have to be realistic and acknowledge this cannot be an option.
what I feel should be improved is the way the various servers report the main format not being played. I liked how DSS servers highlighted the issue on the GUI but besides that one should go to the CP and understand that ‘reverted to PCM’ is actually an error message.
Reminds me Brad’s idea of showing a text line just outside of the frame on 35mm ‘you should not see this text, please report to the cinema staff’ when the movie was Mia framed. Maybe a similar message ‘you’re currently hearing the backup soundtrack, please complain with the manager’ could work ?
