  • 5.1 Surround with HDMI input in GDC SR-1000

    Hi there,

We're hoping to play 5.1 content through the HDMI channel of our GDC Sr-1000, which is connected to our Dolby CP750. The HDMI playlist uses the same audio channel in the dolby (digital 1) as DCP for audio so not sure why it wouldn't play 5.1 unless it's the cable itself. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! My solution at the moment is just to convert the content to DCP.

I suspect it's a setting on the DVD/BD player. Often they just send stereo down HDMI or sometimes Dolby or DTS encoded audio. Ideally, there is a setting to send 5.1 or 7.1 audio down the HDMI output.

    Good luck!

The HDMI connected to the GDC is going to a MacBook, we looked at the sound settings and the 5.1 track basically had the dialogue track missing even though the SR1000 should be 5.1 in the channel. Could it be a further setting in the MacBook or something I have to set in the GDC? the Cue in the HDMi playlist is already "Sound Digital 5.1". Thank you !

Macbooks are infamous for being difficult (and in some cases, impossible) to get 5.1 or 7.1 HDMI embedded audio out of.

Suggest trying a BD player with its HDMI embedded audio output forced to LPCM (not bitstream) into the SR-1000. If 5.1 or 7.1 passes through the SR-1000, is converted into AES3, and makes it into the CP750 successfully, that will identify the cause of the trouble as being in the Macbook.

What software are you using for playback?

If you're using IINA for example, a popular media player on MacOS X, I had good experience with playing back multi-PCM sources om M-series Macbooks. Make sure you disable options like AC3, DTS and DTS-HD on the "S/PDIF output" in settings (it often considers HDMI outputs to be S/PDIF outputs too). Also make sure your file does have multi-PCM sources, if it only has Dolby Digital/AC, DTS or something similar, your best bet will be a player that's capable of real-time transcoding those formats to Multi-PCM like VLC or mplayer.

Try to avoid the QuickTime Player...

Thank you ! We were using both VLC and QuickTime, and noticed that on VLC the dialogue track was missing. I plan on testing tomorrow so I will try this all out. Thank you very much !

I think you must play with the CP750 in order to get all the channels with proLogic II.
I create a CUE signal that activate prologic when we play something from a bluray and that separate the audio
