  • Dbox tracks?

It occurs to me that it's been a while since I've seen dbox listed in a dcp title.

(Not that it makes any difference to me since I don't have that.)

But I'm wondering if that gimmick has worn off now and the movie companies aren't bothering to make dbox tracks?

Or maybe I'm just not seeing them for some reason.

Maybe the studios have started thinking outside of d-box?

With digital delivery becoming so prolific, the distribution methods are changing.

I expect the default may be changing from a DCP with OV-CPL, and many VF-CPLS, To an individual DCP with single CPL, then all separated DCP/VF. Only the versions needed are sent to the locations over digital delivery.
Would be far more efficient in bandwidth use. (Not having to send 3D version to a non-3D site is an obvious saving.)

I was wondering it people like Deluxe may start moving towards a DCP drive having, not a DCP at root folder, but a list of folders with each single-CPL-DCP in it. So they can utilise the same files.
Some smaller distributors have already started doing this.

The fact is, the original idea of the DCP has lost some of its design goals in a digital delivery world.

I still see the D-BOX labels on a lot of classics... but don't particularly recall seeing any when in festival mode with newer releases the last few years.

Wow ... you've seen D-Box on "classics"? I can't wait: let's have "Casablanca" with D-Box seat shaking. I can't imagine how much that would enhance the movie. Or "Roman Holiday". Or "Sunset Boulevard". Or "Citizen Kane". Yep, movies are getting better and better!

Maybe I should rephrase, movies booked within our classics series, which seem to now include films all the way into the early 2000s, around when dbox was introduced.

Took my wife to see Wild Robot at one of the local Cinemark’s and we splurged for the DBox seats. This theater has about 2 rows in probably half of their auditoriums equipped for DBox, including the XD room, so I guess the format is still hangin on. I like it; it feels more nuanced compared to the 4DX roller coaster seats, which my wife prefers.

I think dbox systems now have other means to sync to the sound tracks. I know a colleague uses a dbox addon that allows his dbox system to play similarly as some of the offline HI/VI-N systems running on smartphones - they listen to the soundtrack and sync they dbox control signals to the audio fingerprint. That way, dbox is also able to supply their control files/tracks separate from the main DCP distribution, which also grants them some relaxed time window to finish the tracks prior to release. So, you can play your dbox system from a plain vanilla 5.1 or 7.1 or ATMOS/IAB DCP.
