  • Specific question about 3D

    Hi all,

I have a somewhat specific question about 3D.

Yes, it is possible to create 3D with two projectors.
    These are then technically identical.

Our primary system is a Christie CP4420 with IMS3000.
We use it together with XPand and a woven screen with 0.8 gain and it works perfectly.

The old NEC NC2000C with DOREMI DCP-2K4 is still available as a fallback system.

Out of "scientific" interest, I would like to try whether it is possible to connect these two different systems for 3D and what the final result looks like.

Have any of you tried something similar or have any ideas?

    Many thanks

No, you can't. Besides questions like lens and color adjustment, you are missing a common signal path between a server and both projectors, and a sync option. Dual projector 3D should only be done with two identical projectors.

At the very least, you'll need identical servers so that one tracks with the other (including keys, shows...you name it).

As I said, my main curiosity is about the feasibility.

I know that two completely different light sources are used here.
What makes things more difficult is that the laser is equipped with a UHC lens and the geometric alignment of the systems.
Perhaps the inadequacy of the glasses compensates for the different light sources to some extent. Both are of course calibrated according to DCI.
In addition, gamma and co can be used to adjust some things in terms of contrast.

But what do I see with my own eyes in the end?

The IMS3000 should also be able to feed unencrypted content in 2k to the NEC, such as trailers or my own 3D DCPs.
But can it then also simultaneously play the content image-synchronously via the laser and what are the parameters for the glasses?

As far as features go, is there perhaps documented or undocumented technical support for two projectors whose servers are each equipped with their own KDM to run image-synchronously?
The Doremi is actually a Dolby now : )
Is there really nothing that can be done about it, neither on the hardware nor on the software side?

All the "should" logic aside... I would think your technical hurdle would be to get dissimilar projectors and servers to communicate using the same sync protocol for a multi-projector licensed setup. If you could overcome that then you could goof off with the 3d side quest on non-matching equipment.

As the DCP2K4 implemented dual projector 3d by driving each projector with a single hd-sdi link, and no extra sync cabling. Perhaps it would "technically" be possible for 2K 3D content if you just sent the other SDI output over to the IMS3000 set up as an alt input. But i'm not sure if it would work, especially with encrypted content.

The encrypted SDI into a CP4420 with IMS3000 is the problem here.
