I think I have the answer for security cameras, and for less than $200.

This is a Vtech VM924-2 baby monitor. It has two cameras. If you just need one, you buy the VM924 instead.
I put one camera in my auditorium and the other in my lobby watching the front door. The display unit is wireless so all you have to do is recharge it once in a while. (I have no idea how long a charge lasts, I just finished setting it up.)
It has an (optional) sound activated setting so you can have the display unit activate only when the camera unit hears a sound. The sound level required to activate it is user-settable.
You can watch one camera at a time, both on a split screen, or automatically switch between cameras every ten seconds.
As I said, I just this minute finished setting this thing up so we'll see how well it works over time, but it seems like a pretty nifty gadget.
