A few IMAX and Dolby Cinema venues played Gemini Man in the above formats respectively but frame rates this high with 3D aren't supported or DCi complaint ?? The DCi soec states a maximum of 48fps for 2K 3D Smpte and 24fps for 2K 3D interop. And what would even be the bitrate on such DCP's ??

How are 4K/60fps/3D and 2K/120fps/3D DCP's made or authored ??

Some of these formats are indeed not DCI/SMPTE compliant, but these versions were never meant to be played on general digital cinema equipment. Both Billy Lynn and Gemini Man had some limited roadshow type presentations which did not use general cinema equipment, but special installations.
Also, Dolby Cinemas and Laser IMAX systems use special dual projection systems with these capabilities, and were able to play Gemini Man in these formats. They were created in collaboration with Dolby and IMAX to make sure the DCPs would work on these systems. They never circulated in standard DCI compliant cinemas.
Barcos ICMP-X server and series 4 projectors may soon support 120fps/4k in a DCI compliant system. That, however, will still be a 2D system at that resolution and frame rate (maybe they will support 4k/60fps in 3D).
However, in a dual projection system, it could support 4K/120fps 3D.
Next HFR/3D release is probably AVATAR 2 this December. As far as I understand, they are still investigating towards the various release formats. Not much has changed since Gemini Man.
As far as authoring is concerned - there is not that much difference in authoring if only the frame rate is raised.Last edited by Carsten Kurz; 03-15-2022, 06:45 PM.
