  • Brutalist Chromatic Aberration

I'm wondering if anyone besides me had lots of green and red fringing (chromatic aberration) with their Brutalist DCP?
I'm wondering if it was intentional, or related to Vista Vision or a bad DCP.
I called Barco and they were pretty sure it was content related.
I also saw a Reddit thread where people were commenting on it.
My Barco has a xenon bulb so not laser related.
    Just curious.

Was it uniform across the field or more exaggerated in some areas? All scenes or just some?

There seem to be quite the array of experiences in that Reddit thread. The laser+glasses is an interesting note. But you are not laser so count that one out.

I did not notice anything in the 35mm print.

Is this on a ShowVault/IMB? There had been issues with color fringing of 4K DCPs on some systems (Dolby DSS200/CAT862).

      Came up here first: https://www.film-tech.com/vbb/forum/...dss200-servers

ISDCF discussed it for a while and it seems related to certain J2K decoder chips/firmware issues, they identified a few different ways this would show.

See 'JPEG 2000 decoder problem': https://www.isdcf.com/wp-content/upl...108vPOSTED.pdf

Don't know if this is related. Doremi J2K decoders have a/some 4k issue(s), but as far as I know, they are not hit by these specific problems.

Is 'The Brutalist' a 4k DCP?

'subjective convergence' is a known issue with RGB laser projectors and viewers wearing glasses. In that case, some viewers in the same room wearing glasses would notice RGB convergence issues that viewers without glasses would not notice. The CAT862/decoder chip color fringing would be visible to all viewers the same way.

The "Brutalist' DCP we had as backup for our 70mm shows was 4K.

(FYI: My manager told me during a meeting earlier this week that the 70mm
shows at the venue I'm at had the 3rd or 4th highest box office receipts of
all the theaters that ran Brutalist in 70mm for the entire country.)

Just showed it last week. I watched the whole movie and saw no problems.

A number of other venues have experienced this, seemingly all with Barco projectors and DoReMi or Dolby servers.

We mentioned this to Deluxe and got the following response (last month):

”This is a known issue. The studio is aware. Deluxe has been working with the studio and Dolby.”

Which is a great help to the folks who are trying to provide a quality presentation for their customers.

Thankfully I'm not one of them -- I don't have none of a Barco projector, a doremi or a Doby server, and I'm not playing Brutalist.

Still, it seems pretty bad when the studio knows there's a problem and there's no apparent rush to fix it. "We're discussing it with some committee" isn't doing anything to help out the guy on the ground.

But this DCP is playing in the US for more than 2 months now?

I would have expected an alternate DCP would have been rushed out if this issue was so widely apparent. Even possibly going to a 2K DCP for the effected locations.

In the UK we were sent both the 2K and 4K DCPs by default.

                      Been away from my computer.
Yes it is a Showvault/doremi IMB and Barco 2k-12c.
All of these replies are interesting.
Glad to be done with the Brutalist.
Never had a problem with 4k content before.

I'm just asking this because nobody seems to have brought it up, yet... Have you checked your lens?

If I see chromatic aberration in an image, the first place I look is in the optical chain. I'd make sure that the lens is clean on both ends. I'd check to see that everything is plumb, level and square. I'd look over everything to make sure that nothing has been bumped or knocked out of alignment. If you have any appropriate test patterns, put them up and give your final image a good look-see.

In my darkroom, I have even put a strip of RP-40 (PA-35) film in the enlarger and projected an image on the easel, just to see what's what.

This might not be an issue for you but, if you see fringing in your image, it would be worthwhile to go back and double check things.

Not the lens. All other content is fine

Julian Antos' post sums it up.

Yes, I understand you. I have read Julian's post and I understand what he said, too, but neither the studio nor Deluxe can see your projector. Only you can.

Does it got gas in it?
