I've got a CP650 that has twice now dropped all LCR audio while running. I'm told the surrounds were still working. The front panel is still lit up but not showing any meter activity. Rebooting cures it. I've got spare units to swap in, but wondeing if anybody else had this happen.

Though your post makes it sound like you loose them at the processor/LCD. Possible to check that an alternate format also is missing them while it is occurring?

Might be time to recap the power supply in that CP650. Power supply issues can cause all sorts of strange things to happen. I'd also run the CP 650 on a UPS (They don't seem to mind even the cheaper modified sinewave types, so something simple from Tripp-Lite or Cyberpower will do...stay away from APC they are total garbage now), as "dirty power" coming in can also cause issues.
Another possibility is the mainboard or daughter board could be going out. Is the firmware up to the latest version? Try powering it down, remove the front panel and reseat both boards and all of the connectors.
Use the CP650 software and save all the settings now to have them ready for dropping in one of the spares you mentioned.
If the problem persists, might be worth getting a tech in to dig deeper, and you should also prepare to replace it altogether. CP950 or other alternatives.

I would say it is critical to know if the surrounds are really there or not. If you lose the surrounds too, I would suspect the AES3 input (digital in). The CP650 clocks off of pair 1 (L/R) and if something is flaky on that pair, none work. But if the surrounds are good and the mains are really deal, that points more to the CP650 and not the option board CAT790. When in doubt, try reseating everything...this stuff is old. The capacitor and power supply theory is also a good one.

I did once have a 650 with the customer complaining that one of the side surrounds was crackly and would cut in and out. Pulling all the cards, a thorough internal clean, replacing the very screechy exhaust fan, and giving all the gold contacts the DeOxit treatment during reassembly fixed it. That was just before covid, and the last I knew, it was still working OK.

yes - press the menu button 5 times and then OK and you have rotating pink noise. Press the illuminated format button to go back to normal operation.
that would help identifying where the issue is as suggested.
im with Steve, its important to confirm whether the surrounds also are gone. I’m not super familiar with the 650 bit I don’t think LCR have much in common.
What format are you using? AES directly into the 650 or an external D/A?

You are starting to get into the CAT772 board (I/O board). The CAT790 handles the AES input AND the surround outputs. That would explain working surrounds but not working mains. The CAT772 also handles the 6-channel analog inputs so again, spotty response there point to the CAT772 again. The CAT774, system controller could be causing issues as audio has to pass through it on its way to the CAT790.
I come back to...reseat the main boards and check the power supply. Make sure you have a good and CLEAN voltage rails with virtually no ripple.
